Music For Orchestra: Kinsey Suite For Piano, Orchestra and African Percussion
“Kinsey Suite (2015)” is a music composition by Kevin Kraig Toney for Symphonic Orchestra, Piano, Jazz trio and African percussion. It accomplishes the task envisioned by Antonin Dvorak and later by George Gershwin in finding a true national identity for American music This piece juxtaposes a patriotic musical motif that captures the essence of intriguing melodic sonorities of a Negro Spiritual. The journey continues through the Harlem Renaissance, Jazz and African percussive rhythms. These iconic music traditions depict this historical American landscape with virtuosic improvisations into the canvas of a symphonic orchestration. Kinsey Suite was inspired by the paintings of the “Kinsey Collection”, the largest collection of African American art and artifacts in the United States. The composition features four movements:
